Mantell Associates is partnered with a leading global Biopharmaceutical company, who is seeking a seasoned and strategic Director of Business Development to drive commercial partnerships, expand market presence, and support the company’s growth from its California headquarters.

This role is ideal for a commercially savvy leader with strong scientific understanding and a track record of building high-impact collaborations in the biopharma industry.

 

Director of Business Development – Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute business development strategies to accelerate commercial growth and partnership opportunities across key therapeutic areas
  • Identify, evaluate, and negotiate strategic collaborations, licensing agreements, joint ventures, and alliance partnerships with biotech, pharma, academic, and investor partners
  • Build and maintain strong senior relationships with internal stakeholders (R&D, Commercial, Legal, Regulatory, Finance) and external decision-makers to ensure alignment and deal execution
  • Lead opportunity assessment and commercial due diligence, including market analysis, competitive landscape evaluation, risk assessment, and financial modelling
  • Drive deal structuring, term negotiation, and execution of agreements that deliver strategic and financial value
  • Represent the company at industry events, partnering conferences, and client meetings to enhance visibility and advance the organisation’s commercial objectives
  • Provide leadership in tracking, reporting, and forecasting business development activities, including maintaining a robust pipeline and CRM updates
  • Monitor industry trends, competitor activity, and scientific advances to inform strategic decisions, prioritise opportunities, and shape long-term growth plans

 

Director of Business Development – Requirements:

  • 8+ years of experience in business development, commercial strategy, or strategic partnerships within the biopharmaceutical, biotech, or life sciences sectors
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and closing high-value deals – including licensing, collaborations, and alliance agreements
  • Strong scientific acumen with ability to engage technical and executive stakeholders in value-based conversations and negotiations
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills, with experience influencing cross-functional teams and senior leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse complex market data, evaluate commercial opportunity, and develop compelling business cases
  • Experience working in global markets with ability to navigate multiple geographies, regulatory environments, and commercial models
  • Based in California with eligibility to work in the United States; hybrid on-site presence expected
